What tends to be worth evaluating
During a modernization, the safety-relevant questions usually include:
- How does the machine currently stop, and under what conditions?
- What state does it return to after a fault or a stop?
- What can the operator see and do — does the interface make the machine's state clear?
- Which safety-relevant devices and wiring exist, and are they documented?
Answering those is part of understanding the machine before you re-engineer its controls.
Modernization can be a chance to improve visibility
Aging machines often ran with limited operator visibility and thin alarming. A modernization that adds a modern operator interface, clearer alarms, and better instrumentation gives operators and maintenance a much better picture of what the machine is doing — which is itself a practical safety benefit, independent of any formal standard.

The machine's real operating requirements — not a template — determine what safety measures belong in the controls design. That is why safety is best handled as part of a proper engineering evaluation of the equipment, not a checkbox added after the fact.
